Life and Works\par
\b0 Jusepe, or JosΘ, de Ribera, also known as the Spagnoletto, was born at Jati
va in 1591. Little is known about his training, which he probably received in Ribalta's workshop in Valencia.\par
He came to Italy as a young man, spending time in Emilia and Lombardy before going to Rome, where he was able to see the works of Caravaggi
o and came into contact with the circle of the painter's Northern European followers. In 1616, de Ribera moved to Naples in the retinue of the new viceroy and his patron, the Duke of Osuna, through whose good offices he received numerous commissions from
churches and monasteries and the nobility. Owing to the large amount of pictures requested from him, de Ribera created a flourishing workshop that was to have a considerable influence on the Neapolitan school of painting.\par
Around 1630, probably unde
r the influence of \b \cf4 \ATXht44 Velßzquez\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 , his crude realism began to soften and he began to experiment with refined chromatic effects and more highly-structured and monumental compositions.\par
From 1644 onward, ill health forced h
im to reduce his work. He died in Naples in 1652.\par
